PRINCE GEORGE – Council wants to look at the idea of banning single-use plastic, specifically, check out bags, from local businesses. Councillor Murry Krause introduced the idea and Council approved a request to have Administration look at it.

Currently, the federal government is contemplating a ban on single-use plastics by as early as 2021. The provincial government is conducting a survey on the issue. The City of Victoria introduced a ban, but it was overturned because the municipality failed to get approval from the Environment Ministry is advance.

“And that’s the reason I asked Council to support it going to Administration to bring back the report about the viability of it being supported.”

Ironically, Krause was present at an announcement last week, in which West Coast Olefins laid out its plans for a $5.6 billion petrochemical plant which would produce polyethylenes to make plastics. But he has no issue with that.
