1,000 kids benefit from this year’s 5th Annual Back to School Celebration
PRINCE GEORGE– The Native Friendship Centre hosted their 5th Annual Back to School Celebration Wednesday, Aug 14 2019.
This year saw 1,000 children walk away with free school supplies for the upcoming school year. Barb Ward-Burkitt, the Executive Director at the Native Friendship Centre says the event has grown so much since the first one five years ago, which saw 300 children walk away with supplies.
Children ages kindergarten through grade 12 benefit from the event, with organizers packing up the exact amount of supplies kids will need for that given school year, “we use the school district to get those lists, and then we prepackage the boxes accordingly,” said Burkitt.
The event isn’t just about getting school supplies, it is also about coming out to have a good time. Bouncers, music, and free food are all part of the event aswell, including a clothing exchange for kids to find new clothes for the school year. Ashleigh Lestage, a mother of three at the event says that it helps take the financial stress out of part of the back to school season, “school supplies are getting ridiculously expensive, so it’s just nice to focus on something else instead of pencils and rulers.”
