FORT ST. JAMES – In an attempt to save her community the mayor of Fort St James declared a state of local financial crisis after a sawmill closed and sold in June.
The declaration for the District of Fort St. James was ordered by the mayor and council close to a month ago. Conifex decided to sell the facility to Hampton Lumber, a decision that left just over 200 people unemployed.
The move for declaration is in hopes it will result in the creation of job opportunity programs by the federal and provincial governments to prevent workers from leaving the community.
Affected employees now have access to a transition team that’s made up of a wide range of stakeholders. The team is in place to assist those hurt by the mill closure.
