PRINCE GEORGE–A rally aimed at putting an end to the “revolving doors” in our justice system took place outside of the Prince George Courthouse this morning (Aug.28.)

Sean Greco organized the peaceful protest in hopes of bringing awareness to the legal system and the public–that residents are fed up. Greco says he planned the rally after noticing repeat offenders were being caught, only to be released to roam the streets again. “These guys are stealing our stuff, coming to court, getting probation, and (are) back on the street to steal our stuff later on that week,”said Greco.

The protest organizer does have some ideas for solutions, “looking at mandatory sentencing out at rehab centres, getting them in touch with mental health associations, if they’ve got a mental health issue. People need to be held accountable, no matter what their addictions, health issues are. We hold our children accountable, why not our adults?”

Member of Parliament for the Cariboo–Prince George region, Todd Doherty says that as a society we should focus on providing more funding towards mental health and addictions to help solve the issue, “A lot of this property crime, and this personal crime that we are seeing, is to feed that addiction. Making sure that when they’re behind bars that they get the treatment that they need, to (help) get off the revolving door that is attributed to addiction.”
