UNBC celebrates sports and back to school with first ever tailgate party

It was a chance to enjoy the sunshine, play some games, and drum up support for the home team.

Saturday UNBC held their first tailgate party prior to the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer game against the Okanagan Heat.

The idea came about from President and Vice-Chancellor for UNBC Daniel Weeks, who spent some time in the United States for his schooling and got to witness first hand how they tailgated.

“The tailgating before football is a big deal. I wanted to bring some of that school spirit back to UNBC and really kick off our home opener with a real event where the community, our new students, and really everybody can get a real quick indoctrination into what it means to be a Timberwolve at UNBC.”

Orientation Assistant with UNBC Holly McVea planned the the tailgate party and she shared to CKPG that when they were planning the event they wanted to make sure it was fun for people of all ages.

“We were expecting community members to come of all ages. It was kind of directed to University students as most of our events are, but it is completely welcoming to the entire community and we want to be inclusive of that.”

McVea, Weeks and the entire UNBC staff are hopeful this becomes an annual tradition and can potentially do events like this for their other sports teams.
