Election officially underway

PRINCE GEOGRE – While the ads have been running for some time, the federal election race is officially underway with the writ being dropped today.
UNBC Political Scientist Gary Wilson says the environment and middle class Canadians will be the targets for the candidates on the national level. He says, on the local front, the two ridings are very different in nature.
“They are very different ridings in the sense that the Peace river riding is a very safe riding for the Conservatives. And has been for many years now. The Cariboo-Prince George riding was close last time. It’ll be interesting to see if the Liberals can challenge once again for that riding.” However, Wilson says, regardless which of the two ridings in question, jobs will be a huge issue for the campaign.
The Cariboo region has been hit hard with forestry curtailments and shut downs, while the Peace River region is dependent on the oil and gas sector.
