Kings drop thriller in overtime to Penticton

Fans at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena were treated to a thrilling hockey game,to say the least, Saturday night as the Prince George Spruce Kings welcomed the Penticton Vees.

It was a back and forth contest early in the opening period as both teams had their chances to break the ice, but it would be the Spruce Kings who got on the board first on their 2nd power play of the game.

Nicholas Poisson netted his first of the campaign to give the home side a 1-0 lead after 20.

In the middle stanza, the Vees would come out flying.

Despite being shorthanded for four minutes straight, the Vees would net a pair of shorthanded goals to steal the lead.

Late in the frame, the Spruce Kings would even the contest after a bit of a scramble in front Estevan product Preston Brodziak pot his first of the campaign and first as a Spruce King to tie up the game at 2.

Penticton would regain the lead early in the third as Danny Weight, son of NHL’er Doug Weight, found an open lane and net his 4th goal of the young season.

Late in the third with the goalie pulled, the Spruce Kings would net the equalizer on a beautiful tic tac toe passing play which was finished off by Chong Min Lee.

With the game tied up at 3 the teams would head to 3 on 3 overtime where it took just over 2 minutes to find a winner.

Philadelphia Flyers 1st round draft pick Jay O’Brien would receive a pass on the left-wing and dashed in past the defender and went from his forehand to his backhand to end the game as Penticton secured the extra point and the 4-3 win.

With the loss in overtime, the Spruce Kings drop to 1-1-2 on the season.

They will be back on the ice Friday night in Chilliwack as the Spruce Kings begin a three-game in three-night road swing in the lower mainland.

The Kings will play Langley on Saturday and Coquitlam Sunday.
