It was a big year for the Terry Fox run in Prince George.

Not only was it the 39th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope, but it was also the 40th anniversary of when Terry Fox and his brother Darrell and Terry’s best friend Doug Alward ran in the Prince George to Boston marathon.

As a result, first-time organizer Ryley Newman wanted to make sure this year’s Terry Fox run was a special one for the community.

“The 40th year is a big one here for Prince George. He kind of started the testing grounds for the eventual Marathon of Hope here. So there is a major significance of Terry Fox here in Prince George,” stated Newman.

Newman stepped up to lead the organizing committee and get the ball rolling on the run, but he shared he couldn’t have done it without the help from volunteers.

“Scott McWalter, who was the previous run organizer helped me out quite a bit. A number of local businesses also stepped up and helped out a lot for the event.Logistically we are in a great spot. Exploration Place has a great parking lot for us, and a nice river view walk makes things a lot easier for us.”

Part of the reason Newman stepped forward to organize the Terry Fox run this year was because of the impact the run made on him growing up.

“Terry Fox for myself in Elementary school and High School and we always did that run every September. I think the big thing for me was I would come down here when I was 5 or 6 years old on my bike and ripping around downtown Prince George and I think that legacy is just a staple in a Canadians life. When fall comes around you know the Terry Fox run is coming and you know he is just arguably the most iconic Canadian hero.”

This year the organizing committee raised just over $7,500 for cancer research.
