March & rally to honour those who have fallen victims to violence
PRINCE GEORGE–Take Back the Night–a march and rally aimed at raising awareness about violence in the community against women and children–is back.
The event has taken place every year since 1992 and this year is scheduled for Thursday, Sept.19 at the Canada Games Plaza at 6 PM. The evening will begin with speakers, including a UNBC Professor who’s researched the Highway of Tears. Participants will walk from the Plaza, to the courthouse where a minute of silence will be had in memory of those who have been lost to violence, before returning to the plaza.
Cassidy Shuvera a Woman’s outreach worker says that the event is targeted at women, those who identify as women and children to “come together, (and) unite, to resist fear (and) to speak out against violence,” she said to us in an over the phone interview.
“Almost every one that does identify as being a woman does have some story that they could share that would relate to being able to take back the night…If it’s having to take out the keys when you’re walking to the car at night, because you’re not feeling 100 percent safe in doing that, or having someone walk you out to your car….”said Shuvera.
