1,000 Ravens campaign launched
PRINCE GEORGE – Over the next year, small paper ravens will be appearing at the University of Northern BC. The Ravens campaign was launched today as “a new project to engage the entire university community to learn more about what reconciliation means.”
The goal is to have a thousand individuals make a single origami raven.
The raven is an important symbol of First Nations culture. It is considered a symbol of change or transformation, and sometimes the raven is considered a trickster because of its ability to change and transform.
Bev Best, the Manager of Aboriginal Student Engagement describes the raven as a creature of darkness that stole the sun in trying to find the light, akin to what is sought through reconciliation. But, as a trickster, the raven can make things challenging, much as reconciliation.
