“We are suicide prevention, as a community”: First walk to remember those lost to suicide

PRINCE GEORGE– The first suicide prevention and remembrance walk by the Northern BC Crisis Centre is taking place next week.

On Sept. 30th at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, the Northern BC Crisis Centre will host Soles Remembering Souls, an event aimed at remembering those lost to suicide.

Sandra Boulianne, Executive Director of the Northern BC Crisis Centre told us that unfortunately when people are lost to suicide sometimes that is all they are remembered by, “that’s really a shame, these people have lived lives, they have contributed to the community, made memories with loved ones, and so we still want to honour the lives that they’ve lived,” she told us in an over the phone interview.

Boulianne shared with us that her brother in law was lost to suicide and that she will be walking for him on Monday. People are able to register loved ones online in order to have a placard made with five things they remember that person by.

Boulianne’s brother in law was lost to suicide in 1984 at the age of 20.

“Sometimes, just the topic of suicide can feel awkward and scary but we really want to make this event one of hope and optimism that together we can prevent suicide in our community.”–Sandra Boulianne, Executive Director of the Northern BC Crisis Centre

Boulianne wants to encourage people to write five things they remember their lost ones by online in order to create placards (like the one seen above) for the event.

From 6-8 PM candles and the placards will be laid out at the park, food will be provided by Tim Hortons, music and live art will also take place. Mayor Lyn Hall along with First Nations representatives will make an appearance. Boulianne wanted to highlight that Orange Shirt Day also falls on Sept. 30th, a day to remember those lost to suicide through historical trauma, “we want to acknowledge that there is a link with a high suicide rate amongst First Nations people because of historical trauma,” said Boulianne.

Soles Remembering Souls is an event that started in Victoria, however, this is the first year it has been put on by the Northern BC Crisis Centre here in Prince George.
