Cougars earn first point of the season in shootout loss to Royals

Sep 29, 2019 | 8:09 AM

It was another back and forth contest Saturday between the Prince George Cougars and the Victoria Royals as they met for the 2nd time in as many nights on Vancouver Island.

Ethan Browne opened the scoring for the Cougars midway through the first period to give the visitors an early lead.

Victoria would respond in the middle stanza as Keanu Derungs netted his 2nd goal of the campaign on the power play to even the game at one.

Just like Friday night, the two teams would head into the 3rd period tied at 1.

With just 1:27 remaining in the period Victoria would get their first lead of the hockey game thanks to Carson Miller who potted his 2nd goal of the campaign.

However, unlike Friday night, the scoring wouldn’t stop there.

Prince George would receive a power play with 1:05 remaining and with the goalie pulled, it would be Ryan Schoettler who would tie the game for the Cougars with just 17 seconds remaining and send the game to overtime.

Neither team would find the back of the net in the 3 on 3 five minute overtime session and a shootout was needed.

The teams would trade goals in the opening round of the shootout and then in the 4th round, it would be Gary Haden, who would beat Taylor Gauthier and give the Royals the extra point and the 3-2 win.

Prince George now sits with an 0-3-0-1 on the year.

The Cougars will look for their first win of the campaign Friday night when they host the Kelowna Rockets.

Face-off is at 7:00 p.m. from the CN Centre.
