PRINCE GEORGE — Today (Oct.2) was an historic day for the Lheidli T’enneh and UNBC.

Chief Clay Pountney and UNBC President Dr. Daniel Weeks inked a deal today that builds upon a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2016.

The Northern Promise Partnership Program will provide two options for members of the Lheildi T’enneh to attend UNBC at no cost to the student.

The first option provides candidates who meet UNBC admission requirements with the funding they need to achieve an undergraduate degree at UNBC. The University provides full tuition support for a full undergraduate degree, and the Lheidli T’enneh Nation will cover funding to support student needs such as living expenses, including housing, food, and transportation, fees (other than tuition), textbooks, and tutoring.

The second option is available to Lheidli T’enneh identified students that don’t meet the normal admission requirements for UNBC entrance, yet demonstrate strong academic promise, or wish a transition experience from high school or college to university. UNBC will provide full tuition support and the Lheidli T’enneh Nation will cover funding to support student needs.

It is something not done anywhere else in Canada.

Both parties say the agreement is a direct and meaningful response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
