Red means stop and green means go

PRINCE GEORGE–After an accident Tuesday involving a couple of cars and the Italian Club downtown, some business owners want to raise awareness and urge caution to drivers about the busy intersection.

If you have a car, you may have driven through the intersection of concern–the four-way stop on 5th and Dominion, one that Luciano Pagnotta, Italian Club President, told us Tuesday, is “infamous” for being dangerous. CKPG News was at the intersection on Tuesday, Oct.1st and witnessed three honks and two close calls at the intersection within 20 minutes.

However, Prince George RCMP say that specific intersection is not one of concern to them, mentioning that any intersection can be dangerous. “Most collisions happen at intersections and it’s not surprising in a downtown core, on two busy streets that collisions do occur there,” said Cpl. Craig Douglass to us in an on-camera interview.

For Marquee International Food and Gifts Owner, who’s been at the corner for the past 20 years, close calls are a normality and doesn’t think it warrants the addition of a traffic light. “I would prefer more of an awareness campaign, we have a park across the street now so that brings a lot more foot traffic. I would actually like the RCMP to do a little bit more spot checks,” said Marquee International Food and Gifts Owner, Brian Chang.

For now, RCMP just want to remind the public to make sure they are approaching intersections with caution, ensuring full stops, checking for oncoming traffic and following the rules of the road.

According to ICBC between 2013 and 2017 there was an average of 2,900 incidents at intersections every year.
