TYH: Is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?
Breakfast, many deem it to be the most important meal of the day…but is it?
We spoke with local, Northern Health dietitian Laurel Burton to see what her thoughts are on the topic, “I would say that all meals are important. I mean, the benefits of breakfast are they do fuel you for the day. So, I mean adults and children alike, we know there is evidence to suggest that it helps your cognitive functioning, whether you are going to school or whether you are going to work. It allows you to just get more variety in your day.”
When you look online though, you’ll find some interesting, yet controversial opinions. Some saying that eating breakfast is a good way to kickstart your metabolism in the morning, in order to burn more calories throughout the day. Others saying that skipping the meal can help you burn more calories. Burton mentioned that finding a routine that works best for you and your health, in a case like this, is what is best for your health.
As for what people should be eating, again Burton says that it is up to the individual–there is no magic recipe or food. “I think a big thing about recommendations for breakfast is, what foods do you love? What foods do you enjoy to eat, and what foods do you either enjoy to make or that are relatively simple,” she said to us.
