PRINCE GEORGE – The Coast Inn of the North will be abuzz this weekend, as BC Honey Producers Association is holding its AGM in Prince George. It’s time to reflect on the success of the past year and the challenges as well.

Association President Kerry Clark says the Varroa mite still poses a huge risk to bee populations, but there is another threat looming.

“The honey industry worldwide is threatened not biologically, but economically, by adulterated honey. People have found out how to make a product that looks like honey from rice. It’s a rice syrup.”

He says it is far cheaper to produce than honey and very challenging for the average person to distinguish for real honey.
