Cougars defuse Rockets to earn first win of the campaign

The monkey is off the Prince George Cougars back.

After a tough loss Friday night at the hands of the Kelowna Rockets at the CN Centre, the Cougars bounced back Saturday with a 4-1 win in front of the home faithful to earn their first win of the 2019-2020 season.

Jack Sander would open the scoring with 2:57 remaining in the 1st period on the power play for his first goal in the Western Hockey League.

Ethan Samson doubled the Cougars lead halfway through the middle stanza on the man advantage with his first in the WHL and first of the season to make it 2-0 Cougars.

Kelowna would get back to within one just a few minutes later on a power play of their own thanks to Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Nolan Foote.

However, on this night the Cougars wouldn’t be denied.

With the goalie pulled, Josh Maser would find the empty net to make it 3-1 Cougars and Filip Koffer netted his first in the WHL into an empty net to make the final 4-1 Prince George.

16-year-old Tyler Brennan was superb in between the pipes for the Cougars in the win.

Brennan made 26 stops in his first WHL start.

The Cougars now own a 1-4-0-1 record on the year following Saturday’s win.

The Cats will be back on the ice Friday night when they travel to Spokane to face the Chiefs.
