September numbers show average month weather-wise for Prince George

Oct 7, 2019 | 10:31 AM

September brought a little bit of everything weather-wise to Prince George and the surrounding area.

Sunshine, fog, cloud and most notably rain.

Even though it felt like the region was blanketed with rain over the course of the month, it turns out that was not the case.

“The normal temperature on average in Prince George is 10.4 degrees and that takes into account daytime highs and overnight lows. Even for precipitation normally in September, you get 56.3 mm of precipitation. Most of that falls entirely as rain, but sometimes you get a very late snowfall. This year we had 60 mm of rain.”

Despite the season turning to Fall just a couple of weeks ago one question which residents continue to ask is when is that first major snowfall going to hit the region.

“October shifts pretty quickly into winter up in the Central Interior so obviously people getting prepared is not a bad idea, but right now it’s hard to say when the first snowfall is going to be. It usually comes probably sometime in October or it can be postponed into sometime in November, but October tends to be a transition month. Especially you get a bit of a cold snap and then followed by a system coming in from the Pacific and you will get the warm air overriding the colder air that might still be in the air and then you get snow from that.”

Back at the beginning of September, Environment Canada predicted a warmer than average Fall for most of British Columbia.

Despite the average month of September, and the unpredictability of weather, Environment Canada is still sticking to their prediction of a warmer than average Fall.
