Bob Zimmer

Q: Why are you running for office?

A: I have always said the main reason i want to run for MP is to make a difference. And reflecting on the last 8 years I can say that I have and if re-elected will continue to work hard to do so.

Q: How does your party plan to address the issue of climate change?

A: We support environmentally sustainable resource development and its potential global impact to reduce emissions. A great example of that is providing British Columbia liquified natural gas to replace higher emitting forms of energy to other countries such as China. Some parties are proposing that Canada stop producing all forms of energy today while not understanding by providing LNG and Canadian technology to the world would have a much greater impact. If just a fraction of energy producers in China were to use Canadian carbon capture technology they could reduce emissions by 300 megatons. Further I support renewable energy like the geothermal project in Valemount that potentially will use the earths’ natural heat to produce electricity.

Q: How would you address housing challenges facing some Aboriginal communities across our region?

A: Conservatives support effective investments in fundamental areas such as access to housing, health services and drinking water. It is critical that government spending translates into meaningful results on the ground. The previous Conservative government has given $303 million annually to Indigenous communities for housing and we will continue this support for our communities.

Q: What’s your stance on the development of pipelines?

A: I support the development of pipelines as long as they pass the rigorous approval process that Canada has in place. We have also proposed a national energy corridor which will include pipelines, that will help us reach our target of energy independence by 2030.

Q: Should the federal government help those affected by the downturn in the forestry sector? If yes, how?

Yes. We need to provide immediate assistance to those who find themselves without a job. Thankfully in many of these regions there have been other natural resource projects that have provided opportunities for work such as Conuma Coal in Chetwynd and Site C in the North Peace. However, long term we need to get these workers back doing what they love to do which is why a Conservative government is committed to negotiating a successful Softwood Lumber Agreement, establish a task force on the woodland caribou, protect our forests from pests, ensure real representation at regional development agencies.

Q. Do you think there should be term limits for MPs?

A: Not necessarily. I have seen first hand colleagues who have served several terms become even more effective with wisdom the experience gained.

Why you should vote for me:

Q: What would you do to help struggling seniors in the region?

A: I along with our party support our seniors. I was raised to care for our my grandparents and believe we need to do so as government. Some ways we are supporting our seniors are: We will increase the age credit by $1,000. We will remove the GST from home heating bills. We will scrap the carbon tax, these initiatives will put up to $1500 back in the pockets of our seniors.

Q: What is something interesting about you that voters don’t know?

A: My favourite sport is rugby, I’ve played at a high level, my sons have played and specifically my son Tim is playing for the U17 and U18 BC Men’s teams. We have all really enjoyed the game and the people that we have met because of it. Canada currently is competing and the Rugby World Cup in Japan and we are pulling for them. Go Canada Go!

Q: Where in the riding do you live? Why? What are your favourite places to spend time in?

A: I am a proud northerner and live in Fort St. John I was born in Dawson Creek and we moved to Fort St John when I was five. It’s always been my home. I also have many friends and family in Prince George and area. Favourite places to spend time would be camping/fishing in the Canadian Rockies. We truly live in the most beautiful area on earth.

Q: Name the last Netflix program you binge-watched.

A: Homeland
