Mackenzie Kerr is running as a candidate for the Green Party in the Cariboo-Prince George riding. Here’s what you need to know about the candidate:

Mackenzie Kerr

Q: Why are you running for office?

A: I am running for many reasons but the biggest is that the status quo is not working. I am running to bring a different way of doing politics to Ottawa. We need a voice that can represent our region without whipped votes by the party leader and we need to have Green MP’s elected to bring real climate action Ottawa.

Q: How does your party plan to address the issue of climate change?

A: We have created a 20-point climate plan called Mission: Possible that contains a costed, robust, roadmap of fighting climate change. A Green government will pass into law a Climate Change Act requiring a 60 percent cut in climate-changing emissions below 2005 levels by 2030, reaching net zero in 2050. We will be heavily investing in renewable energy, building retrofits, and transitioning to a green economy. Check out our plan to learn more.

Q: How would you address housing challenges facing some Aboriginal communities across our region?

A: First we would legislate housing as a legally protected fundamental human right for all Canadians and permanent residents. I am shocked it is not already. We will change the legislation that prevents Indigenous organizations from accessing financing through CMHC to invest in self-determined housing needs.

Q: What’s your stance on the development of pipelines?

A: Our party supports a fair and just transition away from fossil fuels. We believe as we transition to a green economy we want to be using Canadian oil first but the facts show we already have enough pipeline capacity to meet that need for nation demand and do not need to expand or build any new pipelines.

Q: Should the federal government help those affected by the downturn in the forestry sector? If yes, how?

A: Yes. We believe we need a long-term sustainable forest plan that is not just profit-driven. We will start by investing heavily in replanting programs for our burned forests, banning the export of raw logs, banning spraying glyphosate on our forests so we can regrow our deciduous trees as fire and beetle barriers again.

Q: Do you think there should be term limits for MPs?

A: No, I believe that if an MP has the confidence of the population through re-election then this is our form of a “term-limit”. I believe we should encourage more young people to get involved in politics, as there is very little representation. If we had Proportional Representation this would truly help.

Q: What would you do to help struggling seniors in the region?

A: Seniors are too often an invisible minority in our communities. We will create a National Seniors strategy to bring the attention to the wisest people in our community. We will invest in Pharmacare, affordable housing for seniors, increase the income replacement rate from 25% to 50%, home renovations so Seniors can age in place, and much more.

Q: What is something interesting about you that voters don’t know?

A: I am in the process of completing my private pilots license. I have 90.5 hours in a Cessna 172 and am very excited about the future of electric aviation that we are seeing already happening at Harbour Air in Victoria.

Q: Where in the riding do you live? Why? What are your favourite places to spend time in?

A: I live in Beaverly, half way to West Lake. I live there with my family as housing is expensive and I am a student. My favourite place to spend time is around the dinner table with family.

Q: Name the last Netflix program you binge-watched.

A: Orange is the New Black but I’m currenlty watching Knock Down the House with Alexandria Ocasio- Cortez on repeat. Highly recommend.
