Mavis Erickson is running for the Liberal Party of Canada in the Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockie Riding, here’s what you need to know about her:

MAVIS ERICKSON

Q: Why are you running for office?

A: I am running for the office of Member of Parliament for the Prince George/Peace River region because I will ensure that political decision-making will include a northern voice, perspective, diversity and inclusion.

Q: How does your party plan to address the issue of climate change?

A: The Liberal party is extremely in support of protecting our environment. In the north, we have the most beautiful natural resources in the world. I would work hard to protect the natural beauty of our region and the protection of the environment for our future generations.

Q: How would you address housing challenges facing some Aboriginal communities across our region?

A: I have always been a strong advocate for Indigenous issues. Indigenous housing issues have been created through many years and as a Member of Parliament I would ensure that this issue be moved forward in finding meaningful solutions.

Q: What’s your stance on the development of pipelines?

A: I am careful, considerate, and practical to the development of pipelines in the Prince George/Peace River region. I am open to the development of pipelines; however, there can be no final decisions of development without respectful, accountable, and meaningful engagement with northern communities. The Liberals are open to finding the balance between the economy and environment. We want to invest in clean energy and the economy as well.

Why you should vote for me:

Q: Should the federal government help those affected by the downturn in the forestry sector? If yes, how?

A: This is a pressing issue in the north with many of the logging mills being shut down that is impacting the entire forest sector. The Liberal party is committed to ensure real progress with the forest sector workers and their families. The Liberal party will work with the Forest sector workers and will find solutions like education, training, and the development of new employment opportunities.

Q: Do you think there should be term limits for MPs?

A: As a Liberal candidate, I am well aware that we are being elected for a specific term limit. I support our system that recognizes that Member of Parliament are elected for a set term. This system has worked in the past, and I see no personal reason to change this aspect of the system

Q: What would you do to help struggling seniors in the region?

A: As a Member of Parliament, I would support initiatives to protect, support, and encourage quality of life, financial support, and assistance for our seniors. Assistance and support for seniors helps build a strong Canada.

Q: What is something interesting about you that voters don’t know?

A: I am very proud that I was the third or fourth Indigenous woman to attain and receive a Harvard Law Master’s degree (L.L.M.) in 1996.

Q: Where in the riding do you live? Why? What are your favourite places to spend time in?

A: I live in Prince George. Prince George was the central area for me to live, work, and raise a family

Q: Name the last Netflix program you binge-watched.

A: Atypical – A show about an autistic boy learn to survive society’s challenges.
