Legal cannabis turns one
PRINCE GEORGE – Today marks the one-year anniversary since cannabis was legalized and municipalities are still waiting to hear about any revenue-sharing from the Province.
The City of Prince George joined 33 other municipalities in a survey conducted by the Union of BC Municipalities, which indicates administration of cannabis will be roughly $464,000 a year for things like policing and permitting.
Edibles also became legal today, though they are not expected to be available to the public for 60 to 90 days. It’s widely anticipated edibles will generate a greater amount of revenue.
“When the edibles start adding in, we can still hope that’s going to add to the excise tax. But hoping to revenue isn’t dealing with the fact that our costs are already being incurred,” says Councillor Garth Frizzell.
