Vaping continues to be a hot topic across the nation.

Locally in Prince George, School District 57 is looking to spread awareness when it comes to the dangers of vaping to both its students and their parents.

“The issue of vaping is one that we as a school board and a School District, staff, senior administration, and parents are taking very seriously,” shared School Board Trustee Ron Polillo.

“It came up recently at our district student advisory council meeting. We meet with students every month. Interestingly enough the discussion which came up is why kids are vaping.”

Polillo and the rest of the trustees heard directly from students who were concerned with the amount of vaping which was going on by other kids.

Due to vaping coming into the limelight just a couple of years ago, many residents are uneducated on how harmful it can be.

“There are chemicals in vaping and harmful chemicals in vaping that you inhale. Those chemicals have a long term can have a negative health effect on your lungs, increasing risk of cancer, and you have to be careful of long term health effects with vaping,” explained Medical Health Officer for Northern Health Jong Kim.

When it comes to why students may be vaping, the students which Polillo and the rest of the committee talked to, did provide some potential reasons why.

“I think a lot of it is addressing the root causes that students are facing right now with a lot of stress and mental health issues and they think this is one way to alleviate this,” added Polillo.

School District 57 was hoping to make vaping a topic for candidates of the federal election as they hope the new Federal Government can take significant steps to solve the issue of vaping among kids.
