Plastics Ban

Council considers plastics ban

PRINCE GEORGE – Council is taking a wait and see attitude toward a ban on single-use plastic carry-out bags. That’s because the provincial government is currently reviewing public feedback on the CleanBC Plastics Action Plan. Also, the City of Victoria is embroiled in a court case over its decision to ban plastic bags and Council would rather stay out of the courts.

“But doing nothing is not the right thing to do,” countered Councillor Murry Krause.

Council all agreed the writing is on the wall with respect to the use of single-use plastics, with the federal government indicating it will impose a ban on the use of single-use plastics, including plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates and stir sticks as early as 2021.

At the request of Councillor Cori Ramsay, the City will take a look at its own single-use plastics, with another Councillor citing such things as the plastic bags provided at dog parks, etc.
