Maybe skip the costume?

How to keep your pets un-spooked this Halloween

PRINCE GEORGE–October 31st, Halloween. A day when your doorbells may ring non-stop, fireworks will be lit up and your pets…well they may be traumatized from all the noise.

The SPCA is putting out some reminders of the Do’s and the Dont’s for your pets this Halloween. We spoke with Alex Schare, Manager of Animal Centre Services at the North Cariboo SPCA and he told us that keeping dogs indoors, in a quiet room is the best option for Halloween Day. “Maybe even get them accustomed to the sound of the doorbell…and maybe give them some chew toys or something to distract them,” said Schare to us in an on-camera interview.

And then there’s costumes, from superheroes to hotdogs and flamingo’s, your dog can be almost anything for Halloween but is it the best for them? “We don’t recommend costuming, one reason is it affects your pets ability to move naturally, also affects their ability to show you their body language so they might not be able to wag their tail or show you the positioning of their ear…they can also overheat in a costume,” Schare told us.

We spoke with Total Pet, Store Manager Derian Sawatsky who told us that dog costumes have been a hit this year, “A lot of pet owners in Prince George also don’t have children so a part of the experience of Halloween is also coming in and trying things on–the same thing you would do with your kids at Value Village…and the experience with everybody is the same thing. So even if they have children going out and being a part of the community and doing that with their dog and their kids is the same thing.”
