PRINCE GEORGE – Council got updates on two sporting events coming to the city next March. And each of the updates had some quirky sides to them.

The first is the World Women’s Curling Championships are here from March 14th to the 22nd. And already, the event has attracted curling enthusiasts from far afield.

“They’re already signed up to come from Ontario,” explains Glen Mikkelsen, General Manager for the CN Centre, where the event will take place. “We have volunteers coming from Alberta as well. So Calgary, Edmonton and across Alberta. And also from British Columbia. Folks from Vancouver Island and across southern British Columbia.”

And more volunteers are needed. The World Curling Federation would like to see between 350 and 380 and only 233 are registered to date. And the deadline to register through the Curling Canada website is November 24th.

Once the curlers exit the CN Centre, the ringette players arrive four days later, taking up Kin 1 for the Western Canadian Ringette Championships between March 26th and 28th. As Council learned, the event is competitive for the players but also a training ground for the officials.

“While they are officiating throughout the day, they’re being assessed by their provincial sports organizations and they meet every night and go over their performance,” explains local Coordinator, Jennifer Erickson. “And whoever does really well gets propelled into the gold medal games. So it’s quite intense for these refs.”

In fact, it could pave the way for these officials to find their way to the nationals someday.
