Above seasonal temperatures giving City crew’s added time for winter prep

PRINCE GEORGE — As the little ice our city has experienced slowly melts away, city crews have a little extra time to prepare for the snow and freezing temperatures that sit just around the corner.

City crews are busy mixing road salt and traction material while others have swept residential roads.

Meteorologists are keeping their eyes on “The Blob”, an anomalous patch of warm water in the northern Pacific Ocean as Prince George experiences above seasonal temperatures.

“Right now, the winds and the flow is coming from the west from the area of ‘The Blob’, so that’s why we’re getting this warmer than average weather,” said Environment Canada’s meteorologist Doug Lundquist.

“That being said, we’ve done some research that shows perhaps ‘The Blob’ results in a strong ridge of high pressure over the pacific, and that could be so strong that it could draw down air from the Yukon and Northwest Territories across British Columbia and we could be colder than average.”

With Environment Canada forecasting above zero temperatures into the weekend, crews continue to prep for old man winter. The city is reminding motorists that parking restrictions on city streets are in effect from October 15 to April 15 each year to help with snow operations.
