All Charged Up

More charging stations coming

PRINCE GEORGE – The Province has committed to restricted vehicle sales to zero-emissions by 2040. That means electric cars. But, outside the Lower Mainland, electric charging stations are few and far between.

BC Hydro, with the help of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, is working to close that gap.

“So we’re working on Phase Three of building this electric vehicle network across the province. That’s supposed to be finished by the end of 2019. We will hit that for the most part.”

Construction is underway in 100 Mile House, Williams Lake and Quesnel. Bc Hydro is charged with installing ten Level Three fast chargers.

But the fast-charging stations are not the only part of this equation. The Level Two charging stations are also on the radar.

“So we’re looking at putting those in and hoping to have funding to do about half of the Level Two stations that we need across the project within the next year,” says Janice Keyes with the Community Energy Association.

And Gammer says there are also plans to extend the Level Three fast-charging stations out west.

“We applied for funding for Phase Four which will be a build-out west along Highway 16 all the way to Haida Gwaii,” says Gammer.

“So that, again, is a proposal that’s been put forward to [Natural Resources Canada] and the Province. So we’re waiting to hear back.”

Phase Five will establish charging station into the Northeast.
