Create your own DIY indoor composting bin this winter

PRINCE GEORGE–Whether you live in an apartment or not, composting during the winter can be difficult, so how do we go about it in our City?

According to Rachael Ryder, Waste Diversion Manager for the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, putting our decomposable waste in the garbage is not the best for the environment.

“When you have waste in the landfill, and as it decomposes… because it’s an anaerobic condition… the way the landfill is built then you’re going to be producing methane gas. So if you have other ways of breaking down the waste, such as composting you’re actually introducing oxygen into it so it’s aerobic and then that way there is less methane being produced,” said Ryder in an on-camera interview.

So how exactly do you compost at home, and indoors? Terri McClymont, Executive Director with REAPS says there are a couple of ways for you to keep being green while the winter months approach. Creating your own DIY Vermicomposter (worm composting) is an option.

What you’ll need:

  • A Rubbermaid bin (36 L)
  • Boot mat
  • Four cans
  • 1 Cup of sand
  • Shredded paper (moist)
  • Red Wiggler Worms

“What you do is you drill holes in the bottom and holes on the top (of the bin),” said McClymont. You then place the bin on four cans, on top of a boot mat and fill the bin with shredded moist paper, 1 cup of sand and your Red Wiggler Worms, which you only feed once a week. The perfect location to keep your bin is somewhere warmer in the house, as worms do best in warmer conditions.

The worms thrive off of foods such as fruit, eggshells and veggies, however, McClymont warns about feeding them onions and potatoes, as they aren’t the worms’ favourite. “Stay away from meats, oils and dairy products,” said McClymont.

The castings (worm poop) can be used in for your indoor plants and stored outside over the winter for the summer when you’ll be working on your garden. Currently, the Regional District of Fraser Fort George doesn’t offer food waste composting, however, does offer to compost yard waste.
