PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George RCMP have a new crime-fighting tool at their disposal and it’s the first of its kind in Canada.

The local Mounties have partnered with Amazon to tackle porch pirates with the first Bait Package program. Here’s how it works: Amazon provides the packaging, merchandise and surveillance technology to help police track down a package that has been stolen.

“As soon as someone decides to take a package, [the technology] is activated and they’re not going to get very far,” explains Cst. Brent Benbow, who initially contacted Amazon with the idea. “We’re able to track them and they’ll have no idea we’re tracking them and they’re going to get arrested. We’re trying to let [theives] know that porches are not a community Christmas tree. So if one does take one of these packages, they’re not going to be receiving a gift. The only ride they’re going to get is a ride to the detachment.”

To date, bait packages have been deployed over 50 times at various locations in our Detachment area, with a total of three activations. One of these investigations has led to the arrest of a 37-year-old male Prince George resident. The investigation has been submitted to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
