Sport Tourism dollars beefed up
PRINCE GEORGE – Council has approved adding to more available funding to its 10-year Sport Tourism program. The Strategy was approved in 2017 and, since them, the Sport PG-Hosting Grant has been available. In 2019, 23 events received funding from the grant program worth just over $44,000 but those dollars generated more than $5 million in economic spin-offs.
“The minor grant, Sport PG grant, comes out of the Major Events Reserve,” explains Adam Davey, the Director of Community Services. “The idea of it is sport organizations can apply for this and they are provided funding per participant. So this is smaller events.”
But this week, Council supported the creation of another pool of money.
he Major Sport Event Program targets larger events, like national international events. The money for that comes from Major Events Reserve fund, which Council tops up by $200,000 a year.
