PRINCE GEORGE – A lower mainland couple left the city of Abbotsford 8 years ago to find a rural area to raise their two young boys.

They decided to move to the rural community of Hixon, with their backyard chickens in tow. Recently the family was informed raising livestock within the community is breaking the law.

They were surprised by a bylaw not allowing livestock were they live. The family received a temporary farm permit, but with some conditions.

They could grow fruit and vegetables but no livestock. According to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, the bylaw is in place so the community can have some consistency and character with the kinds of things that go on in a neighbourhood.
