Another tabletop exercise in the works for 2020

PRINCE GEORGE – Another tabletop exercise is in the works for 2020.

While last year’s focused on wildfires and evacuations, this year’s has a shift to address procedures in the event of an incident involving hazardous materials.

The City has submitted an application for grant funding through the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Community Emergency Preparedness Fund in the amount of $25,000 to conduct an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) tabletop exercise.

Last year, the CN Centre was the home for the tabletop exercise with a 900 square foot map at ice level and 80 participants from a dozen organizations on hand. The purpose was to walk through the procedures and steps in the event of a wildfire scenario.

The proposed tabletop will likely operate in a similar fashion, but with a focus on hazardous materials. The City of Prince George successfully used CEPF grant funding to cover third-party consultant fees to support 2019’s three-day tabletop exercise.

The hope is the same for this year, further enhancing emergency planning and response within the city, encouraging full participation of the City’s EOC team, and will work with external emergency management groups to ensure Prince George is prepared in the event of a possible emergency.
