Final city budget is pending

PRINCE GEORGE – If you are interested in knowing how much your City property taxes will be going up, you will have to wait a while.

Council passed the Lion’s Share of the budget last night, but some requests for extra services have been deferred to a future meeting. One of the requests comes from various departments and are specific to downtown. But it was deferred so as to provide an opportunity for a new Select Committee on a Safe, Clean and Inclusive Downtown to meet.

Many of the different departments have put forward a status quo budget for operations, and that would have a tax implication of 1.89 per cent. However, Council has passed three “enhancements,” or extras.

Two come from the RCMP.

The first is for a data processor Supervisor to deal with growing pressures to carry out the workload which is currently being covered by RCMP officers, often on overtime. That position is $91,070 which equals .08% to the tax levy.

The second RCMP request is for a forensic analyst to help deal with what Supt Shawn Wright called “an explosion” in the amount of technological evidence processing, such as cell phone video. That position is worth $101,476, or .09%, to the tax levy.

However, two requests for extras were deferred to a date no later than the last week of February.

The City must submit a balanced budget to the Province no later than May 15th.
