PRINCE GEORGE – Originated in Norway, a unique sport has found a small yet loyal group of athletes right here in Prince George.

It might look like just a typical day out on the slopes as you see a group of people strap up their bindings, that is until you introduce the speed that comes with some added horsepower.

The sport is called skijoring, the clash between skiing (or yes, snowboarding) and horses. Just in the past year or so, a small but loyal community of skijoring has risen in Prince George with regular practice sessions being held at Hylee Training south of the city.

Last year, Prince George Skijoring put on their first formal event near the CN Centre where Chris Charters and his wife actually won the sprint competition, and are getting ready to defend their title, utilizing the practice time at Hylee Training.

While some are using this practice time to get ready for Feb. 16 event, others are using the opportunity to introduce themselves to a whole new sport and activity to embrace the winter with.

The combined practices have also acted as a way for the group to ensure they’re all going about the sport safely and sharing ideas… even if there might be the odd tumble from time to time.
