Chance meeting forges artistic relationship

PRINCE GEORGE – A unique relationship was on full display at Studio 2880 today.

In 2016, clay artist Leanna Carlson headed to the Far East to learn about a new form of artwork.

“So I went to Jingdezehen to do a residency there. And while I was there, I took all kinds of lessons, including a lesson from Huang Fei, painting Chinese blue on white porcelain.”

The artistic relationship between Carlson and Fei grew and he eventually came to Canada and has been doing workshops across the country.

He says he enjoys painting winter scapes, but there is only snow for one week of the year. And not much snow, on top of that.

“But here the snow is so big. And last time, in 2014, I came here and I learned to ski. I was surprised, standing on top of a mountain, it’s different. After that, I changed my work.”

Carlson still marvels today at how one chance meeting in a far-away land changed her life forever.
