Dogs and mother’s ashes lost in trailer fire

PRINCE GEORGE – The cause has still yet to be determined following a Jan. 9 trailer fire that claimed the lives of two of Danielle LeBlanc’s three dogs.

“It was probably under five minutes that it all happened. It all happened so quick. I’ve never seen fire move that quickly in my life.”

It all started when Danielle heard a crack of a window from the living room of her and her boyfriend’s trailer, interrupting a cuddle session with their three dogs.

Smoke was quickly seen coming into the house from the exterior of their front door. With their escape blocked by fire and smoke, Jake, her boyfriend, broke one of the windows in order to allow Danielle to escape while he tried to rescue their dogs.

Sheeba, their five-year-old husky, was the next to escape through the broken window. Her boyfriend tried to open up the backdoor in order to allow their other two dogs to escape, but as he did smoke bellowed through resulting in him passing out instantly. Danielle was able to pull his body outside to safety before attempting to run back into the trailer to save her two Rottweilers, five-year-old Queenie and six-year-old Apollo.

“By the time I got to them they were already dead from the smoke.”

Still inside the home, Danielle then passed out as she made her way to safety.

“I don’t know if it was a neighbour or just someone who was nearby, but he was a mechanic for the fire hall across the street from my house, but he basically saved both of our lives and he tried to save both of my dogs even after he knew they were dead.”

From there, Danielle and Jake were rushed to the hospital. While Jake suffered mostly just smoke inhalation, Danielle suffered 2nd to 3rd-degree burns to 40 per cent of her body, as well as a broken foot.

Her mother’s ashes were also lost in the fire among a number of sentimental items.

Following an investigation of the property and the damage to the trailer, LeBlanc said police didn’t find any accelerants that would cause the fire and are baffled that the fire started at the front door in -20 degree weather.

Doctors told Danielle that despite the burns, she would be able to return to work whenever she felt fit, however, it’s the broken foot that has her a few months removed from returning to work.

While here life sits in ashes on the property, she hopes to keep the property and start something new.

“I do want to stay at that property, mainly now because my mom’s ashes are gone on that property, as well as now my two dogs.”

Keeping a positive outlook despite her loss, Danielle said it wasn’t initially the case.

“When it first happened I was pretty negative and I thought my world was going to end, and that nothing would be the same. But seeing as how everyone has been super supportive. I’ve only been here for a year. I’ve been telling myself that what I put out into this world is hopefully what I get back from the world. Life goes on and hopefully, there are bigger and better things out there for me, and maybe this is how the world wants to show me how to do it or something.”

Due to the age of the trailer, the home was unable to be insured. Danielle’s boss, Nicholas Worden of Interior Vape, has started a GoFundMe in hopes of assisting Danielle through this difficult time as both she and her boyfriend try to get back onto their feet.
