PRINCE GEORGE – With the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum, Grade 12 students are now required to complete a capstone project in order to graduate.

On Thursday (Jan. 23), graduating students at Duchess Park Secondary School held their Gallery Walk Presentation.

According to the Ministry website, students are encouraged to select a capstone development process that aligns with their interests and strengths, their community connections, and learning areas they would like to explore more deeply in order to support their plans for post-graduation.

“This year is the launch of our Career Education 12 course,” said Nicole Mercer, Career Development Coordinator at Duchess Park. “The purpose of that course is to get students to dig deeper, really think about who they are – their skills, passions, their attributes, and their career and life plans, and start making some plans for their future.”

From athletes to artists, to yes… a clown as well, students put their future endeavours on display, while also discussing how their experiences thus far in life will contribute to their future development.

“It’s spectacular. I was going through and taking a look at the Gallery Walk,” said Mayor Lyn Hall. “There’s a couple of things that really stand out to me, it’s the exceptional presentation that each student is giving as people come up and talk to them about what their future might be. And I think just the confidence to do this, that’s the big piece that amazes me.”

Mercer said working with many of the students throughout their high school education and now seeing them figuring out their future goals and aspirations is a rewarding feeling as an educator.
