Cougars split weekend series against Kamloops

PRINCE GEORGE – The bells were ringing, as was the goal horn inside the CN Centre on Saturday (Jan. 25) as the Prince George Cougars took down the Kamloops Blazers 3-1, earning the Cats the weekend split against the B.C. Division-leading Blazers.

Kamloops defeated the Cougars 3-0 on in the first half of the weekend series on Friday.

Taylor Gauthier backstopped the Cougars to their victory as he stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced for the night, a night in which the Cougars held a wedding ceremony during one of the game’s intermissions in front of the 3,077 in attendance. Gauthier was named the first star of the game.

After a scoreless first period, Jonny Hooker snapped the scoring lock four minutes into the second period to put Prince George ahead by one.

Caeden Bankier scored the Blazers’ only goal, late in the second period, as Kamloops had their nine-game win streak snapped.

Tyson Upper broke the 1-1 tie early in the third period, converting on a breakaway less than two minutes into the period, which stood up for the game-winner. Captain Josh Maser added an empty-net goal in the dying seconds.

With the win, the Cougars improved their home record to 7-12-1-2 and their record against the B.C. Division to 7-12-1-3. The Cougars are eight points back of a wildcard playoff spot in the Western Conference. Attendance was announced at 3,077.

The Cougars continue their six-game homestand next Friday, Jan. 31 against the Tri-City Americans (14-25-4-1).
