Bachrach raises concern over dwindling salmon populations
OTTAWA– Skeena-Bulkley Valley Member of Parliament, Taylor Bachrach, brought the topic of BC’s wild salmon crisis to attention in Parliament today (Jan.31.)
A recent study conducted of the Skeena River sockeye found that the returns have fallen by three quarters in the last century with natural disasters such as the Big Bar slide only it making it harder for the already dwindling salmon population.
Bachrach called on the government to take urgent action with a funding package for habitat restoration, climate adaptation and stock monitoring aimed at returning wild salmon to abundance.
“In Northwest BC and across our province wild salmon are the lifeblood of many communities. For generations, they returned to our rivers in huge numbers but as anyone out on the Skeena River last summer can tell you, wild salmon are in crisis and the Liberal government is failing to act” said Bachrach.
