No More Stolen Sisters: Advocating through art for MMIW

Feb 10, 2020 | 11:35 AM

FORT ST. JAMES–After realizing that several women have gone missing in his and surrounding communities, Davis Monk, decided it was time to speak up and have his voice heard using art.

“I thought I’d get a group of women together just to show that we could raise awareness,” said Monk in an over the phone interview. And he did just that, he got a group of women together, did their hair and make-up and began to snap away with a camera, creating No More Stolen Sisters.

“I just want the women to have a voice.”–Davis Monk

“He does this on his own time and he doesn’t have to,” said Faith Pierre, a volunteer who took part in the photoshoot.

Monk hopes to continue this form of advocacy, not only with missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) but anti-bullying and cancer advocacies as well, however, will continue to raise awareness of the MMIW.

“I want the women of…all over, I want them to know that if they want to join the group, they are more than welcome.” Monk hopes to grow the group, with more and more women in order to continue to bring awareness to the subject and one day perhaps have enough to parade across Fort St. James.
