PRINCE GEORGE–If your diet doesn’t consist of solely plant foods than you may not have noticed but a few local restaurants have started launching plant-based menus to cater to the vegans in Prince George.

For Jon Letchford, Director and Chef at Ritual Coffee Bar in Prince George, it was an easy switch to a fully plant-based menu as the majority of the staff at the Coffee Bar eat plant-based foods.

Ritual Coffee Bar’s plant-based menu made its first appearance in mid-January, after testing out vegan baked goods and getting a positive response. Courtesy of Ritual Coffee Bar Facebook.

“We have a couple dedicated vegans on staff,” he told us in an over the phone interview, “around December of last year we started doing more vegan baking and that really took off for us, it showed that there was a community in Prince George that was underserved.”

The fully plant-based menu was launched in mid-January and Letchford says the feedback from the community has been positive since.

“We are starting to see more of it but it is definitely one of those things where you go outside of Prince George and…it’s just a very common thing…sometimes it just takes a few people to start doing it and then everybody goes ‘oh.okay. that’s a thing’,” said Letchford.

Cimo Mediterranean Grill also launched a plant-based menu before Christmas of last year.

Samantha Siegrist, Assistant Manager at Cimo Mediterranean Grill, is a vegan herself, “When I first went vegan it was hard going out with friends, there wasn’t a lot of options, I want people to feel included and get to eat great food that isn’t just a salad!”

“In the last few months, I have noticed more plant-based options at local restaurants, which is fantastic. As it becomes more mainstream I’m sure more will embrace it.”–Samantha Siegrist

Farmhouse Catering Company Ltd. is also embracing the plants with their first Plant-based Dinner Night on Feb.13 at 7 P.M.
