TYH: Healthy relationships for youth
What is a healthy relationship? The National Domestic Violence Hotline defines it as a relationship that allows both partners to feel supported and connected but still independent; a relationship that involves communication and boundaries.
Foundry Prince George launched a program last fall aimed at providing youth with the building blocks to a healthy relationship, “we focus on mostly romantic type relationships, although…the skills can apply to any type of relationship,” said Christina Laberge a Family Involvement Worker at Foundry Prince George, who also helps run the weekly group.
According to the government of Canada in 2016, over a quarter of reported violent crime in Canada resulted from family violence and almost 67 percent of family violence victims were women and girls but that doesn’t mean that men aren’t affected.
In fact, three Canadian sociologists reported on previously overlooked data that contradicts what the majority of people may think, saying that men are equally as likely to be victims as women.
