BURNS LAKE–Ten years today (Feb.12) is when eyes across the world were on Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics and one Lake Babine Nation member is reflecting on being a part of history.

Wilf Plasway Jr., part of the Lake Babine Nation was chosen to perform at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. Plasway says he was on his lunch break at a local grocery store in Burns Lake, at the time, when he was informed he had been chosen to participate.

“I was really happy that community members had chosen me to do this.” –Wilf Plasway Jr.

Plasway says he spent two weeks in Vancouver practicing before the big day and then on Feb.12th Indigenous people from across Canada welcomed athletes from all over the world through dance and drumming.

Plasway says the experience helped shape him into who he is today “this has helped me a lot…to be strong in public areas. I was always a shy, nervous person…since performing for this, I have grown used to it by doing a lot of performances in front of everyone.” Plasway is thankful to his community for allowing him to play a role in a piece of history.

He hopes that he can serve as a role model to the young people in his community seeing how far he has come in the ten years since the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Around 2,600 athletes from 82 nations took part in the event.
