Coast GasLink camp has opportunity for Vanderhoof

VANDERHOOF – With the blessing of the Agricultural Land Commission, work is underway west of the Vanderhoof Airport to accommodate a Coast GasLink camp this summer.

In the meantime, the District of Vanderhoof is negotiating possibly legacies to come from that project.

“We’ve been told by many communities that have been involved in these projects. Certainly in the Northeast,” says Mayor Gerry Thiessen. “What are those things that would be of benefit to your community?”

While the District is still contemplating its options, the Vanderhoof Airport Development Society already has a list of things it would love to see turned over, such as the fencing that will secure the camp.

“Presumably that fencing will have no use afterwards and we need fencing on this airport for security,” explains Dr. Paul Collard, President of the Society.

He says the Society is also hoping to secure some of the facilities from the camp to replace the airport’s aging “terminal” with a larger facility as well as temporary accommodations for potential flight school students from far afield. The population of Vanderhoof from the latest Census results is 4,439. Coast GasLink says the camp will be home to 1,100 workers by mid-July.

But for Mayor Thiessen, while the thought of a 20% hike in the community’s population can be daunting, the opportunities are golden.

“We sense that there will be a downturn in the forest industry and certainly see the mining industry taking up some of that slack. But there is a period of about three years before the mining really gets up and going. [The project] will be a huge asset to our community, I think.”

Coastal GasLink anticipates the work will continue at that site well into 2021.
