Skijor PG beats winter blues with 2nd annual event

PRINCE GEORGE – The 2nd annual skijoring event put on by Skijor PG brought out the Norweigan in everyone as this year’s event drew even more participants and hundreds of spectators at the PG Rodeo Grounds.

Chris and Mary Charters took it one step further, having dressed up in their best Norse Garments, braided beard, horns, and all.

It was their second year participating in the event, having placed first in the sprint event last year.

“She designed the costumes and got them sewn up, and did the horns and the whole thing. [We’re] just trying to represent the Norweigan background to this event,” said Chris.

“It’s a fun event, so you might as well just have fun with it,” said Mary, gesturing to their outfits.

Chris said the idea came to them following last year’s event, adding that a few nights of “arts and crafts” brought the whole idea together.

The couple hopes they’ve kickstarted a trend for the event.

For the event itself, the 2nd year running drew even more participants and several hundred spectators to the Rodeo Grounds.

“We changed venues and came into town. This has been great bringing it into the city. It’s been a neat change,” said event organizer Caroline Perrin.

As new as skijoring is to the region, Perrin states its one of the fastest-growing winter sports. That’s reflective in the growth Skijor PG has experienced, having drawn competitors as far away as Grande Prairie.

Beating the Winter Blues was top of mind when it came to bringing the event into fruition, and celebrating the North with its embracing of the outdoors.
