PRINCE GEORGE – It’s time for a whole new season for the Prince George Spruce Kings.

The BCHL club wrapped up their regular season at home on Saturday, coming up short of a comeback in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Coquitlam Express.

After a scoreless opening period, Coquitlam’s Greg Lapointe opened up the scoring 1:42 into the second frame after going five-hole against Jett Alexander off of a breakaway. The goal marked Lapointe’s team-leading 29th goal of the season.

The Express went on to score another before PG’s Haydn Delorme tipped a Colton Cameron shot to get the Spruce Kings on the board with just under four minutes remaining in the period.

3:39 into the period, Danny Pearson got the puck in the circle and ripped off the post and in past Alexander to make it 3-1 Express.

A breakaway goal by Corey Cunningham, along with a point shot tally from Mason Waite, tied the game up at 3’s, forcing the game into overtime at the RMCA.

After a scoreless extra frame, the game went into a shootout, and it was there that the Express showed their composure as Ethan O’Rourke came up with the game-winner against Alexander.

The Spruce Kings now shift their focus, swiping away their 18-32-3-5 regular season and start fresh with a playoff matchup against the Interior Division’s No. 2 ranked Trail Smoke Eaters.

Trail finished the season with a 36-17-2-2-1 record. In three meetings between the two squads, the Smoke Eaters were 3-0.

The Spruce Kings will aim to defend their historic Fred Page Cup championship run from last season.
