PRINCE GEORGE–Globalu kicked off today (Monday, Feb.24) at UNBC, a four-day-long event embracing cultural diversity.

Lila Mansour is a student at UNBC and representative of the Muslim Association at the post-secondary. She says events like this are crucial to the community.

“In a world of so much fear it’s so important that we reach out to one another and learn from one another because when we learn about each other’s diversities or differences, we feel more comfortable with one another.”–Lila Mansour

She told CKPG that celebrating diversity serves as a great reminder to her and to others to embrace who they are. “One day I went to pick up my brother from school and I was speaking with him in Arabic…and there are some people around us…and he says ‘stop speaking Arabic…people can hear us!’ And of course, I responded to him in Arabic and said no, you should be proud of who you are.”

CNC student Uroosa Nissads, originally from India brought a bit of Indian culture to UNBC with henna, “I’ve been doing this (for the) past 13 years–I love doing henna.”

Nissads is proud to see that so many people are interested in the temporary tattoos made from plant paste, “I am feeling proud that I could actually bring my culture here and most of the people are liking it.”

This is the second annual Globalu event which goes until Thursday at UNBC and includes, speakers, food and entertainment.
