TYH: Staying active in the winter months

Feb 25, 2020 | 8:32 AM

Although temperatures have been rather mild this year, we are still very much in the winter season and for some, that may mean physical activity comes to a halt seeing that the urge to hibernate increases.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation has a list of activities to help keep you active during the winter months such as creating a home gym, climbing stairs, swimming, water aerobics, and walking indoors at places like the mall.

If you live in the north, places such as the CN Centre offer indoor walking throughout the winter months to help keep you active.

“I think that that is such a great option and so many of our northern communities do have facilities and spaces where people can go to walk indoors or wheel indoors.”– Gloria Fox, Regional Physical Activity Lead for Northern Health

Fox mentions that “walking or wheeling is really one of the best things that any of us can do for our health,” and says that it is okay to feel the a bit of the urge to hibernate but to remember to keep moving. So if you’re staying indoors, “get up and move around as much as possible,” when watching TV “do a few exercises during commercial breaks.”

The Rolling Mix Concrete Arena also offers indoor walking Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. from October to April. The CN Centre also offers their indoor walking from October to April from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Cougars Game Days.
