Slippery Sidewalks

Slippery streets “a challenge”

PRINCE GEORGE – This year has been particularly challenging in terms of dealing with ice and snow, with the protracted freeze-thaw cycle.

“This week, it’s sidewalks and now roads where ice has built up. There’a lot of ice-cover requests to deal with ruts and rough travel surface,” explains Blake McIntosh, the City’s Manager of Streets and Fleet Services.

It comes after a resident of the Strathcona area of town called to complain about the walkway that leads from her neighbourhood to a nearby elementary school.

“I worry that the kids will slip, fall and bang their heads when they’re going to school,” says Kelly Patrick, mother and grandmother.

Her voice is one of many who have contacted the City about the sidewalks.

And McIntosh says it’s tough to keep all 192 kilometres of sidewalks in the city clear of ice with the protracted freeze-thaw cycles in recent weeks.

“The entire month has hovered around zero and, during the day, the snow is melting and everything works great. Then at night, it’s below zero and it freezes. So both sidewalks and roads have been impacted by the build-up of ice.”

But McIntosh says, if there is a particularly heinous sidewalk or walkway, by all means, call 311 to report it.
